More than 50 lakh Indian homes now have rooftop solar

India's rooftop solar scheme has passed the halfway mark to its goal of one crore homes.

More than 50 lakh Indian homes, about 5 million, now have solar panels on their roofs under PM Surya Ghar, the government's rooftop solar scheme. Together they add up to nearly 18 gigawatts of power.

The scheme's goal is one crore homes, or 10 million, so it is now more than halfway there. More than 20 lakh families already pay zero electricity bills.

What it means: every rooftop system is a small power plant. It cuts a family's bill and takes load off the grid during the day, when India's demand is rising fast. In July 2026, India's peak demand hit a record 270 gigawatts.
